The Long Beach Golf Club was established in 1994. Several golfers in the Long Beach area got together on a regular basis just to hang out and play golf for skins, bragging rights, etc. One day as the group was heading down the fairway at Skylinks Golf Course Eddie Giles was overhearing conversations; everyone had a nickname for some animal (Bird, Bear, Philly Dog, Duck) and Eddie said we’re walking through here like a ‘Pack’ of animals. Thus the name, The Pack. Our founders played the Long Beach courses regularly, and decided to create a club. Some of the original members were Walt Clements, Ed Giles, Charlie Seymore, Phil Valasques, Harmon Vaughn, Michael Harvath, Eddie Scott, Bruce Roberts, Ed Prendergast, and Charlie Mattis, just to name a few. In 1995 The Pack was introduced to WSGA by Jim Saunders, who was a member of Arroyo Golf Club. Joe Boyd, Southern Area VP at the time, attended one of the meetings at Skylinks to explain the particulars, and to assist in signing up with WSGA. The Long Beach Pack was organized in February 1995 at the semi-annual meeting of WSGA. The rest is history. Charlie Seymore (the first Pack president), Charlie Mattis (the first Pack handicap chair) and Bruce Roberts (the first Pack secretary) still remain active Pack members. The Pack has a scheduled tournament each month, providing opportunities to play a variety of courses. A percentage of proceeds from every tournament is set aside for Junior Golf. These funds are distributed throughout the year to WSGA sponsored junior events. These funds also cover the cost of juniors that play in the Pack’s monthly tournaments. In addition, we support a scholarship program through a local college. The Pack Club Championship Competition is a highlight for members each year. Several different formats have been used in past years, but the competitiveness remains the focus. There is an entry fee for the competition, and there is a payoff for ‘A’ and ‘B’ flight 1st and 2nd place players. The Club Champion is winner of ‘A’ & ‘B’ flight 1st place players, and receives a payoff and entry fee into WSGA Championship tournament.
Thanks to our founders, our membership continues to grow and we enjoy venturing to new golf courses. The Long Beach Pack is a family of golfers, looking for a 'good game'. |
